Kessel Kampers Campervan Winter Advice

As winter draws nearer (I know summer has gone too quickly) you need to ensure your campervan stays in great condition and maybe tackle those small jobs to get it ready for the new season.

Unless you use you camper as a day-to-day vehicle you will need to do a few things to make it hibernation ready you also might want to start a few upgrade or repair jobs.  Or of course get them done at Kessel Kampers.  We have a wide range of upgrades available!

Out top 8 tips for winter hibernation:

1.       Give you van a good clean preferably with a jet wash to get rid of dirt and any mud.

2.       Make sure you drain the water tanks and wash out the waste tanks

3.       Turn off all the gas pipes

4.       You might want to invest in a cover for the Van, this can save you a lot of cleaning!

5.       Check tyres – this plays into the point below but you want to move you van a bit during extended parking as it can damage the tyres sitting around doing nothing.

6.       Start the engine and move the van every couple of weeks this will ensure everything is moving fine and things like brakes don’t lock up when you bring it out of hibernation!

7.       Ensure the battery is kept charged over the winter – This is for both the leisure battery and main engine battery, letting these get to a very low level can ruin your battery.

8.       You might want to put in some dehumidifier tubs.  You will be amazed at how much water can get in your van and this leads to Mold.  Not a nice look…  These are readily available and fairly cheap - We use these ones from Amazon - ANSIO Dehumidifier 500ml Condensation Remover Moisture Absorber Dehumidifiers for Damp, Mould, Moisture in Home, Kitchen, Wardrobe, Bedroom, Caravan, Office, Garage, Bathroom, Basement (Pack of 10) : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

Campervan Winter Upgrades

Winter is a great time to get your camper upgraded, you won’t be using it as much and it will save valuable camping time when the season restarts.

Switch your leisure battery to lithium.

Standard Campervan leisure batteries are normally 12v 105ah acid cell batteries, these are fine for general day to day use but upgrading to a lithium ion battery will drastically improve off grid camping.  With more charge cycles and a much longer battery life these batteries will keep your lights on for much longer!  They also come with things like Bluetooth so you can connect your phone to them to see battery life, charge status etc.

There is an excellent article on this over at - Lead v Lithium Leisure Batteries: A caravanner's guide - Practical Advice - New & Used Caravans & Caravanning Reviews - Out and About Live

Have solar panels installed.

Solare panels are a must upgrade in our opinion, even with the limited sun in the winter months they still provide charging to the leisure battery that will support a longer off grid experience.

Solar panels are a relatively inexpensive upgrade and can support both lithium ion and standard acid batteries.

Fit a heater.

Its going to get cold….. The solution fit a diesel heater.  These discreet controllable heaters enable you to keep warm during those longer winter nights.  Available in several different configuration and costs installing a diesel heater is a must for a winter ready camper!

Repair electrics.

12v Electrics on campers are great but they can go wrong, its not only the engine that needs a service but also the internal elements.  Add lighting, USB ports and fix any devices that aren’t working properly – We do a comprehensive review and service of all camper electrics.

Add a pop top.

Winter is a great time to get this must have upgrade as it will get your camper season ready for next year and should you wish to camp during the winter it gives extra space and air flow to your camper.

Furniture Repairs or upgrades.

Have your furniture repaired or add new elements to your camper.   We can fit almost any furniture upgrade!
